FORT WORTH, TX — 14 Year Old Riley Jackson had heard about the cuts to school spending across the country. But having attended school online for the past three years, Riley assumed that he would be unaffected. This rapidly proved not to be the case as Riley’s Mother/Principal would tell you.
“We run a pretty tight ship here at Jackson Family Education. Our student body is currently a single student. You would think with class sizes this small we would be able to stretch our budget a little more than a normal school with anywhere from a couple hundred to well over a thousand students. But as funds have continued to dry up that hasn’t been the case.”
Like many schools across the country. Riley’s household just didn’t have it in the budget to maintain the school's breakfast program. This was a program that at Riley’s school, fed a staggering 100% of the student population. Needless to say the student was outraged.
“Yeah one morning I woke up and mom said that breakfast wasn’t in the budget and I’d have to start eating it at home. I tried explaining to her that I was already home but she wasn’t having it. I wasn’t aware that my morning Pop-Tart hinged on government funding for education.
Riley’s school was famous around the neighborhood for the extracurricular and sports teams. Now nearly all of those programs have been canceled leaving no opportunities for current students. The Parent of the student body had this to say.
“Riley’s older brother was captain of the Solitaire team for six years running. I had hoped the same for little Riley but it seems that it’s not in the cards. It’s days like this that make us wish we had sent him to that luxurious public school down the street.”
At press time, Principal mom has cut the Art and Music programs, pawning both the markers and the guitar. Despite the dwindling budget Riley is expected to graduate on time, and plans to attend the prestigious Front Range Community College, GO WOLF PACK!
